I’m sitting in my living room right now, listening to Either/Or on vinyl. It’s really cozy in here today. We picked out a few new things from IKEA, sold our old couch on Craigslist and rearranged the room. It’s amazing what a little refresh of your space can do. My dog is asleep on our new armchair his new armchair, and I probably couldn’t be more relaxed right now.

Elliott Smith is one of my all-time favorite musicians. But I should warn you now, this story does not end happily. Smith is no longer alive, which I’ll get into. But in his short 34 years of life, he was very, very sad. Smith frequently sang about heroin addiction or alcoholism or depression, and it was always about his own first-hand experiences. Smith’s third studio album, Either/Or, is named after a book by Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, in which the author explores the conflict between the aesthetic and the ethical, and man’s search for a meaningful existence.

Either way, without balance between the two comes despair. Ultimately, Kierkegaard challenges the reader to “discover a second face hidden behind the one you see” in yourself first, and then in others. In a weird way, this is such a perfect fit for Elliott Smith’s music, and especially his music on Either/Or. His music deals with very heavy topics, but can sometimes sound so much more upbeat than the lyrics suggest. There’s a second face hidden behind it. — Steven Paul “Elliott” Smith had a difficult childhood with his mom and stepdad, and at age 14, he moved on his own to Portland to live with his dad. He played in bands in and outside of school, and eventually took an interest in recording.

Smith continued on after high school to graduate from Hampshire College with a degree in philosophy and legal theory in 1991, and moved back to Portland to take up odd jobs and work on a solo music career. His first release, Roman Candle, was in 1994 and his second, Elliott Smith, released in 1995.

1997’s Either/Or helped propel Smith into international fame, thanks to Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant. He decided nearly half of his movie’s soundtrack would be Elliott Smith songs. Three of them are from Either/Or – “Between The Bars,” “Angeles” and “Say Yes.” Smith had been using drugs since he was a teenager, and suffered from depressive disorders for most of his life. He would release two more studio albums in his lifetime, XO and Figure 8. Smith began working on a third one in 2001, around the same time as he was beginning to show signs of paranoia.

This is also when his heroin addiction began. Smith spent a lot of his adult life being very vocal and open about wanting to commit suicide. Like, he talked about it a lot. To friends, to family, etc. On numerous occasions, he would try to give himself an overdose.

He even attempted suicide once by getting really drunk and jumping off a cliff, but a tree broke his fall and he survived. Many people in his life stayed up nights with him, trying to convince Smith that life was worth holding on to.

By 2001, Smith was lying to family about his heroin use, dropping all the work he had done on a new album, From A Basement On The Hill, and falling deeper into depression and paranoia. By the end of Smith’s life, friends and family say he was a shell of his former self – unrecognizable. He tried rehab, which likely extended his life, and was able to tour again for another year before his death. Elliott Smith committed suicide on October 21, 2003, six short years after the release of Either/Or. His girlfriend at the time of his death, Jennifer Chiba, lived with him in his Los Angeles home.

They had just gotten in a big argument and at the end, Chiba locked herself in the bathroom to calm down and take a shower. She then heard a scream. When she opened the door, she found Smith standing with his back to her.

When he turned around, a kitchen knife was sticking out of his chest. Smith had stabbed himself twice in the chest – one of those in the heart.

Despite emergency surgery, he was pronounced dead 20 minutes after arriving at the hospital. Because Smith stabbed himself twice with no hesitation wounds, coupled with the fact that the coroner reported no traces of illegal substances in his system (just prescribed amounts of anti-depressants), conspiracy theorists have raised the question of possible homicide. I absolutely do not believe this is true. Neither did the authorities, as they reported a suicide and did not investigate further. Elliott Smith’s posthumous release, From A Basement On The Hill, released in 2004, almost one year after Smith’s death. His music was so loved by his peers and his fans alike.

Elliott Smith’s memorial wall in L.A. Smith was convinced at the time his popularity was rising that his music wouldn’t stand out – grunge was having its moment in the Northwest where he was from. But Smith’s music was relatable, and sad, and intelligent, and timeless.

For so many people, his quiet voice spoke the loudest. RELEASE DATE: February 25, 1997 FAVORITE SONG: I immediately tear up every time I hear the first few strums of “Between The Bars.” This song might be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. “Angeles” is an incredible song too, and my other favorite is “Ballad of Big Nothing.” And my other other favorite is “Say Yes.” And you know what, just listen to them all.

I love them all. BEST WAY TO LISTEN: I’ve listened to Elliott Smith a lot in the past decade, but never was there a better time than those seasons of life where I felt stuck. I’ve listened to him after breakups, in times of deep depression, times where I’m just anxious and don’t know why I realize how ironic this is, but there’s an odd sense of calm that his voice has always seemed to have for me. Like yes, this part of life is going to hurt. But it’s not going to hurt forever.

Thanks for reading today. Even if you yourself are not a gloom-and-doom kind of person, Elliott Smith’s music can still be relatable.
